Heart Irregularites

EDIT: Well, I went to the doctor's today. She did an EKG, and found nothing irregular. But she's still concerned (very concerned) so tomorrow I'm going to the hospital for a blood test (to check my thyroid) and on Wednesday it's back to the hospital to pick up a halter, which I'll have to wear for 48 hours and give back on Friday. It will monitor my heart for all that time, and hopefully catch one of my episodes of irregularities. I keep getting chest pain, so I really hope we get somewhere with this, and soon. I just want to get it treated.
This isn't extremely appropriate for this board, but last Monday, (June 20th) I had extreme heart irregularities (palpitations) for nearly 12 hours.
It felt like my heart was beating completely randomly, out of sync. And it would get stronger, then weaker, then stronger. It felt like it stopped for several seconds at one point. It was also painful. It also raised the blood pressure in my neck, so it felt like the blood wasn't really flowing.
I just happened to be seeing my Gynecologist today, and although it's not really in her field, I asked her about it. She kind of freaked out and told me to be examined ASAP with a heart rate monitor.
I just looked it up on WebMD.com and saw it could be nothing, or it could be a sign of heart disease. (WebMD asks for age before telling you anything.) My mom said she used to get the same thing when she was a teenager, but outgrew them. Apparently, I'm very lucky to have survived, normally that causes a heart attack. The heart is supposed to correct itself immediately, but it didn't.
Does anyone know something about this? Has anyone on here ever had this before?
Also, I forgot to mention earlier, I have had them all my life, but only for about 2 seconds every few months.
