I suppose I just need a bit of reassurance here if anyone can help. Over the years of looking up therians and such, of course I’ve come across Clinical Lycanthropy. I always fear that that’s really what this is, that I’m mentally ill or something, but I don’t feel it’s wrong to be me. I don’t suddenly, without cause, snap into a violent feral state. When I shift mentally, it’s usually at the height of emotion when I “forget” to act human. I know that I’m human on the outside, physically and such, but on either end of the spectrum if I’m either really happy/angry/afraid/etc I’ll lose my ability to control the animal side of me. But when I think about it rationally, it doesn’t seem like a mental disorder, it’s the same way anyone who gets angry might yell, or when they’re happy they might jump around in joy. I think the biggest saver is that it isn’t random, and it is not always violent or for the purpose of harm. The only time I’ve ever been violent in a shifted state was when I was defending myself (I’ve had my place broken into a few times and a few other abusive scenarios). So given that most of the time I’m a peaceful person who avoids conflict, and even if I shift, I’m just laying there wagging my tail and listening to the breeze… That wouldn’t really classify as Clinical Lycanthropy would it?

I think that when you are conciously wondering whether or not you are actually crazy, that option kinda goes out the window. Personally, I think that if it really were clinical lycanthropy you wouldn't go from questioning your sanity to a complete behavioral change. Clinical lycanthropes also believe that they are in the process or have before(in this life) literally transformed into a wolf, or occasionally other animals. It's basically a type of psychosis, where you lose touch with reality. And psychotic peopl aren't really aware that they have done so. ;P It's a very rare condition however, and I doubt that(with all the therians/otherkin out there) there could be that many people with clinical lycanthropy. Another thing to remember is that humans are already animals too. They just have a "higher sense of awareness/intelligence"(the latter I'm not too sure about) and most have lost touch with their natural instincts anyways. So I believe that therianthropy or not, some animalistic behavior is natural. In conclusion, I don't think you've anything to worry about. But perhaps keeping some silver bullets on hand can waylay your fears -Mateus

To be honest, if you consciously debate whether you are psychotic or not, you are not psychotic because you are still very capable of sane, rational thinking and logic.
As long as you are aware of it, fully remember where you stand, I wouldn't worry.

Thanks for the replies ^_^ I do have a tendency to over think things and get anxious about my health. But it's true, I don't believe I have ever or will ever physically shift, I don't have that delusion. I wish I could, obviously, but I'm aware that my phantom limbs are nothing more than that. And it's true, even with a human brain, biologically, there still is a way to tap into animalistic instincts that doesn't necessarily make one psychotic.

@notori
The things I would have said have already been said. I sincerely hope your mind is put to rest.

@cheetah
When I first learned about therianthropy, it was from a page that linked from a Wikipedia article on clinical lycanthropy, so for the first couple of months after my "awakening" I was constantly questioning my sanity, but like everyone else said, if you question your own sanity than that means you're not crazy.

Yeah I think that's what happened to me too way back when. Wikipedia linked the two articles so I freaked out and it's been on my mind ever since.

@notori I can tell you that I think it doesn't matter so much anymore, whether you're crazy or not. Whether you can put a label on what you feel or not, because I don't think you're hurting anyone. I've been tossing the idea around of how I could be schizophrenic for over a year now, but I can prove I'm not..or am. It's just that it's who you are. Whether rationalized or not, and these guys are real to me and to others. That's all I could ever hope for. The way I see it is, if you're happy and can function in society..then I wouldn't label myself. -Rail

@ Notori
You don't need to worry, clinical lycanthropy is much worse than you think; someone who has it does not speak, or even wear clothes. They are also very violent.
The definition of insane in being unable to function... and since you're using a computer, that hardly fits you.

Someone once told me that insane people don't realize that they're insane, so you have to be sane to worry that you aren't ^^

@ Notori: like cap just said and like many others on this thread have said, an insane person doesn't have the ability to question there sanity because they are, well, insane. Sane people do. I know that therianthropy is a lot to take in at some times. I question my sanity every now and then, but then remember if I was insane I wouldn't be questioning. That thought usually assuages my worrying. so don't worry, be happy.

What you've described sounds like therianthropy. The only mental condition anyone has suggested therians have a higher than normal rate of is Asperger's Syndrome. I don't think you have anything to worry about. Nothing is considered a mental illness unless it significantly interfere's with someone's quality of life or ability to function. It doesn't sound like your therianthropy interferes with a job, school, or your general social functioning, so I'd say it's not a mental illness.

I used to be very interested in clinical lycanthropy, just because it fascinated me. If I remember right, it's not usually a stand-alone disorder. Unless you have reasons to fear for your mental health besides the whole "therian" thing in and of itself (and I do realize that's debatable to some ), there's really no need to worry.
