I've been identifying as a gray wolf for quite some time now. Though I've been a wolf therian nearly my whole life, I've only classified myself as a gray wolf a few months ago. Now I'm starting to question this a bit. I believe I may be a Honshū wolf; an extinct subspecies of the gray wolf that resided in Japan. I especially think so as gray wolves are extremely common in the therian community. Are there any ways to confirm this? I'd like to look into meditation, but I'm not sure where to start -- especially since I've barely enough free time or privacy to actually do it properly. I've been trying to do research on Honshū wolves, but since the species is extinct, there isn't much information on their behavior. I would greatly appreciate advice, as this is a very confusing situation for me. Thank you.

One way would be to begin matching up the sensations you experience, and the mental image you have, of your shifting features and behaviors. Although the animal may now be extinct there is at least documentation of their size, shape, and former habitat. Comparing your experiences to what we do know of the Honshu may provide you answers, in either direction.
Meditation as a concept is misunderstood in the west, as you may have seen me mention on other sections of the forum. It's not about clearing your mind and letting random thoughts come to you, but rather it's as state of hyper focus that we use to limit outside distraction as we take a look inwards. In this state you may ask yourself difficult questions. It is important to listen to your intuition and instinct in this state. As drawing conclusions when you are honest with yourself is easier than attempting to force unrelated thought threads. Meditation can be done anywhere, in any position, and through any medium. For instance, I like to use music to help me meditate while I go on walks.
Remember to log your experiences in a form of journal over time so that you can look back on them in the future. Being able to take a second look at what you are thinking and feeling now, removed from the present confusion, will aid you greatly.

I am almost exactly in your same position, so you may PM me if you'd like. I have identified as a parallel realm wolf for most of the 8 years that I have identified as a therian/otherkin. For the past several months or so, I have been unsure of this identify and feel like I may be another species of wolf. I have been actively looking into other sub-species, extinct or alive, and have been most interested in the Kenai Peninsula wolf. However, as it is extinct, I have very little information to work with. So how do I match shifts with a creature that is extinct? I am still trying to figure that out.
