Hello, sorry that i haven't been on lately, i have been busy, and i have been trying to find my animal spirit guides / totems. I haven't seen anything yet, but i have been being drawn to two types of animals, feline and avian. I have been feeling a close connection of admiration and curiosity. But yesterday, i was outside in early morning, injoying the sunrise, when a blue jay flew up, and landed maybe a arms length away form me. First off, blue jays are VERY rare in Texas, more so where i am from. I stood so still, i don't know why, but my heart was racing, it felt if it was about to pound out of my chest. I wasn't scared, it was more of a excited feeling, i slowed my breathing and instinctively looked into its eyes. The blue jay just stood there, tilting its head back and forth, like most birds do when they examine something. It didn't act afraid, it acted more curious of me more than anything. We both stood there, looking into each others eyes, both of us curious of one another. Maybe 5 minutes passed before my mom called me in, startling the bird, but it didn't fly off, it flew to a nearby tree branch, and watched me go into my house. I want to know, was this animal sent to symbolize my totem? Or was it just a lucky encounter with a beautiful bird? I'd like your opinion, and if it was a symbol for my totem / guide, is there something i could do to help get closer to it? Other than the meditating i am doing now? Thank you for your time, and thank you for reading.

I think that, and even this might sound a little crazy to most people, it would be better to rely on strong and vivid dreams than every day circumstances and situations. What happens around us during everyday activities can be too normal and materialistic. A few months ago while doing some work in the garden, a butterfly landed on my upper arm and stayed there. I just stayed still and brought it slowly in front of my face to see it up close, it didn't fly away but that's its own decision. It didn't even pass through my head that it could be a sign. Don't get me wrong, if it might have been, it was wasted on me.
I gave you my example just so you can compare. Remember also, that not everyone might have a totem; equal to that, everyone or no one might have one at the same time. It all goes down to what you believe in the end doesn't it? I don't dismiss their existence, but I don't think I have one, nor believe they exist around me. It's just my opinion Wolven.

Firstly A Totem isn't the same as a Guide. A Guide is an entity that is tied to you, either for your whole life or just a fleeting moment. A Totem is just an animal that symbolises your personality and various other traits you have. Much like a zodiac sign I suppose. It could be a guide, or it could be coincidence.

@wolven
For some reason, I'm having a bit of a hard time to really accept if the blue jay is your spirit guide (not totem). Just because you find something exciting or breathtaking doesn't make it a part of you. If anything, it's just an admiration, or a one-time only moment that makes you slow down and think.
There are few foxes in our area, but when I saw one for the first time in my life, I didn't consider it at all to be my spirit guide or even a totem. The same goes with coyotes or hawks or any rare being- I get excited when I see them, not because I believe that they're a part of me, but just because it's a rare yet curious experience.

@ Kharu, I have to agree for you on the most part. I just follow what i have read/heard before by other sites, books and people. Some say that sometimes outside forces give you a hint or a clue as to when a sort of awakening to various spiritual things, and it was only a thought, and i thank you for your opinion @ Re Harakhti, Oh, i didn't know that. Most of the info i get on the subjects then to be flighty from book/site to the next. I will remember though, thank you ;D @ Noel, I didn't mean the bird itself was my guide, i was saying that maybe it was symbol for my guide, i hope i am explaining myself right.. And it wasn't just excitement, i have seen blue jays a two times before, all be it, it wasn't so close or for as long. But it was some other feeling, something i can't quite describe, though this is no proof in itself either. Either way, it was a great experience with a stunning bird. I do believe that something Avian is connected to me, other than my Kin type. Only time can tell I thank you all for your opinions and wisdom ;D

Now i wouldn't go as far as saying it isn't a guide, end of story.
Personally i'd ask if the bird is a guide in meditation, or ask for more glues to renforce your own desistion. Or perhaps what you experanced that day was your leason, and thats all the bird had to teach you? birds are good for teaching us to look at things from another angle? sometimes when we are desprate to find something we often forget to take a step back and take in the over all ie, a 'birds eye view' on the situation.
i hope i made some sense heh heh ^_^

@wolven
When I took a Shamanism course, they said that a spirit guide will come to you three times when you are asking your spirit guild to come to you. So you might want to meditate on it again and see what shows up. It could be the Blue Jay or it could be some other animal.
When I took the course I found my spirit guide is the fox. It fits me well, as the fox is able to blend into the background and go unnoticed, which is something I do very well.
